Session with Datuk Bridget Lai @ FSTEP

on Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Alliance Financial Group (AFG) CEO Datuk Bridget Lai, a well known lady in banking industry has visited us this morning.

I don't think I need to introduce about her biodata here, you can find out more about her in the Web.

I would share something astonished me this morning. First, she was a FOREX Dealer, a FOREX Dealer who is holding the largest volume in Malaysia. (Every FOREX trader has their own limit in trading.)

Second, she has been to many of the famous business school in the world: Havard, Cambridge, UK Business School...and some I couldn't recall their names. But all these Universities are the 'dream University' of everyone in the world. If you get admitted into one of the University you are considered one of the sharpest knife in the world, yet, she did not go for one only...

Third, she can balanced her busy working life and family life. This is not easy. A lot of people facing this problem and she managed to control it.

She keep telling us that "I am just an ordinary person". Maybe, she is an ordinary person that has made some extra-ordinary choices in life and she climbed up to the top now... that makes her not ordinary... She was a Law student and she made some decision and become a banker... and now the Group CEO of Alliance Bank. Life is full of choices and chances, when the chance comes, don't hesitate and make your choise = Grap the chance!

There are two other ladies she have mentioned: Tan Sri Dato' Zeti, Governor of BNM, the BEST Gorvernor of Central Banks in the World; Ms. Yvonne Chia, Group Managing Director of Hong Leong Bank, the first lady CEO in Malaysia. They are the role model of all of us who want to be successful in life.

Below are something I really like from her presentation:

" I have made a lot of mistakes in my life, do not afraid of making mistakes, you wouldn't learn anything if you never fail before."

If you say you are unhappy with your bonus. Think again, you are paid to do a good job for the company, everyone is doing a good job and that is why they are getting their salary every month; but you have to do excellence job to get good bonus! so stop complaining and be excellent!

If a woman is thinking of marrying a guy and hope to become a full time housewife will have to think again. If the guy you married is a talented and ambitious guy (which every lady is hoping), and you do not have the topics or talents to communicate with him, you will be in trouble. Do you think he will talk to you about kitchen stuff? neighbours' gossip? or some artists' news?

For guys, encourage your love ones to pursue their dreams and career. Sometimes they made their mind thinking of YOU and they give up what they want in life. Ladies are same like us, they have ambition and big dreams, so do not stop them to do something big in their lives. Support them.

Green Packet Roller Coaster

on Saturday, November 7, 2009

6 Nov 09, this is the first time I went for a stock market roller coaster. Green Packet opens at RM1.56, highest RM 1.68 and then lowest at RM 1.26! RM0.42 of difference between the highest and lowest. I have never seen this before, and Bursa queried them for the UMA (Unusual Market Activities).

They responded that they are not aware of any UMA, basically is because of the two announcements made in October and they are expected to expand their business in 2010 so that is why so many funds flow in.

Me and my comrade, Chin VS were looking at the market and discussing what to do (we were suppose to prepare for our exams!). It is very exciting indeed, the price done changes in every single second, 1.26...1.28...1.30....1.40....1.38....1.46....1.47....and then we come out with a conclusion anyway... Just leave it there...For long term we are confident that this company will do well.

GPacket last done price is at RM1.39, -0.100 from close price the day before. Not bad, I personally think that it is healthy because it need some adjustment.

Well, that is an experience of my money flows in and out in every split second from my pocket. Nice one!

2 days before FSTEP 1st assessment

Monday will be our first assessment on Conventional Banking and Insurance/Takaful. A lot of us are having high 'exam fever'.

Yesterday (6th of November) though En. Isa showed us some sample questions, but it doesn't ease our stress... it makes us more stress in fact! Conventional Banking are still OK, but Insurance/Takaful are too much into technical terms. Furthermore, the essay question is asking about 'Claim Philosophy'... what is that?

But anyway, we ll try our best to score in the papers. All the best to FSTEP batch 4 participants.

Introduction

on Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Today is a special day. I have decided to write my own blog! Well... I have been thinking of writing blogs for quite some time ago but somehow due to some reasons I did not start it... But today, I have make up my mind and kick start my blog!

In this blog, I would like to share what I have experienced in life and get some feedback from others, learn from others and move on in lives.

Now, I am a candidate of FSTEP (Financial Sector Talent Enrichment Programme) under the employment of RHB Bank. I have been here for 4 months (Oh man, time flies!) and I have gone through 1 month of English Intensive Course with British Council, 3 months of technical class consists of both Conventional Banking and Insurance/Takaful. Next Monday I will be sitting for the first exam (I am actually in the middle of doing revision...haha) and then I will continue the journey into Islamic and Investment Banking.

I believe that most of us don't really understand about the financial institutions in Malaysia (Including me myself). So right here I would like to share my knowledge which I have learnt from FSTEP with you guys. Banks and Insurance Companies are very important in our lives because they are the custodian of our money, they are the backbone of our economy, and we are dealing with money everyday in our lives, so it is good to know more about them.

Well, this will be my Introduction and I will keep updating this blog with some new knowledge/experiences I have acquired. Now I am looking forward to attend the 5th International Convention on Takaful and Retakaful at Nikko Hotel tomorrow. Hope to gain something special there!
